Day 35 Portland Friends…

…maybe the best type of friends to meet on the road. Don’t worry this post will explain it all. I was climbing on Tuesday, with Brenden in one of the few dry areas in Squamish, when four “Portlandians” walked up. After unloading their crashpads, shoes, and ricecakes off their backs, they begin to warm-up and climb a little. We ended up working on some of the same problems and began chat a bit. Immediately, I could tell this group of people was funny, full of energy, and loved to climb. This turned into an amazing new friendship with four great people: Ben, Vanessa, Audrey, and Alana. They stayed at camp with me for the rest of the week (well, Alana was the only one who actually stayed at the campsite, everyone else slept in their cars). They were kind enough to cook for me two nights serving me Indian food and the best Mac&Cheese w/ Veggies one could have. The third night, Ben and Vanessa picked up my tab at the HoweSound Brewery so I could join them all for dinner. I think they may have regreted this after seeing the bill. It’s kinda pricey there, but I really appreciated it and will definitely take them out to dinner to repay the favor….just another excuse to have to come back to Portland after my travels:) I always offered to throw in some food at dinner time but I don’t think my food was “organic” enough. They don’t like cream corn either:) I think over the course of the week, we laughed and ate…and talked about beards and food more than we actually climbed. There were no memorable sends this week, but I had one of the most memorable times. I will miss my new friends until we meet again…hopefully in October. I only wish they could have stayed longer so Eric could have met them. I can’t say enough about them. All I know is that good friends are the most important thing to bring to the mountains (not everyone will get that inside joke). In regards to many comments posted on my last blog, I didn’t mean to give off the feeling of being bummed out. I really was fine…I’m in Squamish!!! It’s great, even alone…I was just a little sad to see everyone leave:) Things are good. I’m taking a few rest days to let my skin heal, then I’ll be back at it.New pictures are soon to come. Eric is heading back this week and will be bringing me my camera cord. That is it for this installment….Taker Easy,-Matt

Good work up there in Canadia. Leave no pebble unwrestled. After I left you guys I spent a few days in Canmore and ended up belaying Sonnie Trotter on and FA of a ridiculously hard trad climb. Then I hit the bugaboos - that place is AMAZING. I put up some photos of the adventures: http://picasaweb.google.com/danhickstein.
I’m heading to England this wednesday, so be sure to give a holler if you’re going to be in Europe in the next year: danhickstein at gmail.

    Matt,
All is well here in Alabama…it’s cooled WAY off to the mid-90’s….time to start sending projects. Dude I want to go to Squamish BAD….Took Tyler Grace to HP40 yesterday, first time in a long while. Had a great time with her, sent Squeeze Play again, but before I could get on the low start, “Daddy I’m STARVING!!” Good mental training for the comp season I suppose.
Let me know when you start working and send Worm World. Jason Silvey said it’s a rad problem worth the time. Take it easy.

Regardless of the food, the friendship was what was truely organic! Grown from the roots of climbing and savored with our laughs, you were one of the best kind of folk to meet on the road.

Hope those blisters are healing - Worm World Cave won’t know what hit it next week once your back on and crushing with the PANTALONES DE FUEGO…
