Day 50 Back at Smith Rocks

In order to escape the flood waters, we headed south, not the dirty South though. We stayed the night in Portland and hung out with the Portland crew I met in Squamish. It was really good to see them again. Nothing had really changed since I last saw them in Squamish…we ate, talked about food and beards, and laughed until our abbs started to cramp. The next day we checked out this second-hand gear store that Vanessa works at. Needless to say, Eric now looks like he is sponsered by Blurr. He was even talked into buying a pair of Blurr Cords that were two sizes to big. I only purchased one thing: a pair of blue Patagonia Fleece pants for 12 greenbacks….they are amazing to say the least. It’s good to be back in the States, however there are a lot of things we will miss about Canada. I’ll just name a few things, but this list does not cover everything: 3 dollar bags of ice, 9 dollar a night camping, 5 dollars for a gallon of gas, and beer that is so expensive that drinking PBR is not even in the budget. Seriously though, Squamish was an amazing stop. We left with many good memories and many more projects to come back for. We’re going to stay at Mark and Sierra’s compound at Smith Rocks for the next week. We’ll be doing some house sitting, animal care, and slab pouring while they are away. They headed down to the Grand Canyon to run from rim to rim to rim in 24hrs….you caught that right?…rim to rim and back to rim. Me and Eric are going to also try a few routes while we’re here. We’re mainly just takin ‘er easy so we will be fully rested for Bishop next week. For all who want to join us, we’ll be hunkered down in Bishop from about October 1st until mid-November.There should be a couple videos and more pics posted by the end of the week, so keep checking for them.Ben, Vanessa, Alana, and Audrey: See ya this weekend!!Stuart, are you coming or what?Charley, hope you have a good ride back to South Carolina. Call us if you wanna stop in Bishop.Taker’ easy,Matt

Eric - I thought of you when reading this yesterday. It is one of my favorites (for some stretches of time I read it weekly). I think it applies to your current transition and your thoughts concerning the road and the upcoming year (Oh and of course, your life).

‘Beauty must be defined as what we are, or else the concept of itself is our enemy. To see beauty is simply to learn the private language of meaning which is another’s life - to recognize and relish what it is.’ - unknown.

My love to you both and to the rocks you get to play on!
